iTunes Online Film Rental

iTunes although originally only known for its music store,  is now one of the UK’s top 5 suppliers of film rentals.

We all know iTunes as the platform that offers music to those of us that have Apple devices. Well, over the past few years iTunes has been quietly growing its content to include other types of media including films, books and apps.

The two major film rental companies are Lovefilm and since last January, NetflixLovefilm offer a DVD postal rental service and a streaming service, whereas Netflix only offer a streaming service. iTunes however, offer a different type of service, rather than streamed, their films are downloaded.

Content

The films available through iTunes are from a wide selection and include a good number of the very latest releases. You can chose from two different types of quality when renting from iTunes, high definition and standard definition. You are also able to download digital versions of films through iTunes.
Some of the films you download come with iTunes Extra content, this is similar to the additional clips you get on many DVD’s. They include interviews, commentaries and scenes not used in the film.

Pricing

Unlike Netflix and Lovefilm, iTunes don’t offer a subscription based service. With each film you rent, you pay a fee ranging from as little as 99p up to as much as £4.49. Depending on what you want to watch, and how many films you watch a month, this may or may not compare favourably with Netflix and Lovefilm.

Renting iTunes films on different devices

Despite being an Apple service, you don’t have to own a Mac to use it. If you own a PC, you are still able to download iTunes and access all of their content, including books and podcasts as well as of course music and films.
You are also able to access the iTunes service using assorted Apple devices including iPhone. iPad and iPod Touch. iTunes also makes up an vital part of Apple TV which is a set-top box that you connect to your TV. Through the set-top box you can access all the media content available on the service.

Quality and access

iTunes films are available in both high definition and standard formats, with some titles being offered in 5.1 stereo sound depending on the film.
Once you has successfully downloaded your film, you have up to 30 days to start watching it. As soon as you do start to watch it you have a further 48 hours before the film is removed from your iTunes library. You are able to watch the film as many times as you wish in the 48 hours before it is removed.

After your film has downloaded, you have 30 days to start watching it. Once it's started, you have 48 hours to watch it, after which time it will be removed from your iTunes library. Once started, the film can be watched multiple times.
